This was made for Round 2 of our Building Virtual Worlds class. I did all the modeling and animations.
The world was designed to be used in a Head Mounted Display (VR goggles), and the guest was given a real flashlight to hold. This real-world flashlight is what controlled the flashlight in the virtual world and provided a very intuitive interface. We did not need to provide any instructions for the guest to interact with this world. The world may appear a little too dark here, but in the Head Mounted Display it was brighter.
There were quite a few technical challenges with the lighting, mainly because we needed a dynamic, shadow-casting light source. The Panda3D engine only seemed to support one dynamic light at a time, but we wanted the part at the end with the officer to be very dramatic and have light spill in from the outside (from the Officer's flood lights).
We ended up faking it by creating a semi-transparent plane that would stay below the ground plane, and then would raise up slightly as the door opened.
