Title: EcoRaft 2D
Date: May 2005
This is a 2D, web-based game that we designed as an addition to the full exhibit version of the EcoRaft. In this game you play as a farmer who must plant mango trees to provide food for his hungry family. There is a careful balancing act happening here, though. The mango tress provide food for the farmer and his family, but they also absorb nutrients from the soil. Eventually the soil's nutrients will be completely depleted and the soil will be unable to support life. To help keep the soil happy the farmer needs to plant Erythrina trees (the ones dropping red seeds), which help by feeding the proper nutrients back into the soil, restoring it slowly. Old growth trees also help keep the soil healthy, but the farmer must cut some down in order to make room for the mango trees.
I served as the Technical, Art and Design Lead on this project. I created the initial prototype (all art and code) and then after we saw how it could work, we brought on some very talented students and continued developing the game. Much of the code was modified (and a lot more was added) but the foundation and design of the game that I had started remained intact. I created all of the art and animations in this final version. Full credits are displayed at the end of the game.
